Första hälsningen från Uganda (english/svenska)

On our way to Uganda the plane was 2 hours late due to a failure of one of the vents in one of the jet-engines, so we landed 10.30 local time. When we one hour later came to the entrance Major Geoff Payne met us (OC, leader for the Ugandan Command). We went with him to Kampala (the roads are in a terrible state with big holes…), stopped and visited the THQ and had some tea and a chance to check e-mails and travelled on to a hotel where we stayed the night.

At seven o´clock in the morning we went to Kigumbe to attend the funeral of captain Davies Wafula (to the right). He died tragically in a car-accident on his way to Kampala from Lira during Monday night. Davies was to be our co-worker in Lira, and he was also responsible for the programs that the Salvation Army already are responsible for in Lira. So, as you can understand, the situation is upside down because of this tragic loss. According to Gordon, a team usually consists of two persons, but since I´m here, we have extra resources. So for now, I´m in charge of some parts of the projects.
The funural lasted more than six hours and was a fantastic experience, with more than 500 attendents. After the funeral we travelled to Lira and are temporarily staying at a hotel until we rent a house .Today we visited some of the camps and got a view of the situation. Still there is a anxiety, the refugees worry about the future, will there really be peace?Some of the refugees that already moved back to their village still return to the camps by nightfall when they feel safer there than in the village.

(Ami, maybe you can write some of this in the blogg, I will try to find a internetcafé in the nextcoming days so I can write something myself, but I´m not sure when.)

I´ve been deeply impressed by what I´ve seen so far and the people in Uganda seem to be very friendly.

På väg till Uganda så blev planet 2 timmar försenat eftersom det var fel på en ventilerna i en av jet motorerna, så vi kom fram vid 10.30 lokal tid. När vi väl kom ut ännu en timme så möte Major Goff Payne oss (OC, Ledare för Uganda Command). Vi reste sedan med Honom till Kampala (vägarna är urusla med stora hål och gropar). Vi stannade till vid THQ och fick te samt en chans att kolla mailen.
Vi åkte sedan till ett hotel där vi bodde över natten. Vid 7.00 på morgonen reste vi upp till Kigumbe och var med på FA-kapten Davies Wafulas begravning.
Han dog tragiskt nog i en bilolycka på väg till Kampala från Lira på måndag natt. Det var Davies som skulle ha varit vår medarbetare i Lira och dessutom var han ansvarig för de program som just nu drivs av Frälsningsarmén i Lira.
Så som du förstår har det uppstått en helt ny situation. Enligt Gordon brukar det vara två personer i ett team men eftersom jag är med så har vi extra resurser. Det har gjort att jag för tillfället har fått ta ansvar för vissa delar i projekten. Begravningen varade i mer än sex timmar och var en fantastisk upplevelse, det var mer än 500 personer närvarande.
Efter det reste vi till Lira och bor för tillfället på ett hotel här tills vi kommer att hyra ett hus. I dag så var vi ute i ett par av lägren och fick en överblick av läget. Det är fortfarande en stor oro i lägren över eldupphöret och om det kommer att bli fred.
Många som redan har flyttat hem återvänder till natten då lägren är säkrare än att bo i hem byarna. Jag har fått många nya intryck och människorna i Uganda verkar vara mycket vänliga.
